Demigender

Demigender is an umbrella term for non-binary gender identities where someone partially identifies with a particular gender. The prefix "demi-" signifies a partial connection.

Here's a breakdown of what that means:

Partial Gender Identity: The core of demigender identities is a feeling of only partially identifying with a specific gender. This means the connection to that gender isn't complete or fully encompassing of their sense of self.

One Part Specific Gender, Another Part Something Else: This partial identification with a particular gender is often paired with another gender identity or a lack thereof. The "other part" could be another non-binary identity, agender (feeling no gender), or a feeling of being unaligned or neutral regarding gender.

Umbrella Term: Demigender encompasses several more specific identities, such as:

  • Demiboy (Demiman, Demiguy): Partially identifying as a boy or man.
  • Demigirl (Demiwoman, Demilady): Partially identifying as a girl or woman.
  • Demiandrogyne: Partially identifying as androgynous.
  • There can also be less commonly used terms like demifluid (partially feeling genderfluid) or demibigender (partially feeling bigender).

Varied Experiences: The specific experience of being demigender varies greatly from person to person. The degree of identification with the "demi-" gender and what the "other part" of their identity is will be unique to the individual.

Under the Non-Binary Umbrella: All demigender identities fall under the broader non-binary (or genderqueer) umbrella, as they describe gender identities that are not exclusively man or woman.

Not Necessarily About Presentation: While a demigender person might have a gender expression that aligns with their partial identification, this isn't a requirement. Gender identity and gender expression are separate.

In simple terms, demigender describes a range of gender identities where someone feels a partial, but not complete, connection to a particular gender. The "other part" of their identity can vary, leading to diverse experiences within the demigender umbrella.
